Plans to improve green tariff information announced
New government proposals to improve the information provided to customers about green tariffs have been announced.
Hilary Benn, the UK's environment secretary, has revealed he has asked energy regulator Ofgem to provide new guidelines for suppliers to outline the green credentials of their products.
In addition, he has also written to gas and electricity providers to ask them to clarify details about their tariffs and stated that the government is also changing its guidance on corporate reporting.
Mr Benn said that he hopes the moves will ensure that customers have a good level of advice available to them on the issue.
He added: "As with any product in the marketplace, we need to know what we are paying for, particularly as in some cases, choosing the tariff may cost more."
A recent study by energywatch found that four million energy customers do not understand what a green tariff is.
It was also revealed that only one per cent of people in the UK are on such deals.
